How do you figure out what islands are near the mainland for boating?

Boating and Sailing

Is there any way other than word of mouth to figure out what islands there are to stop and visit? Is it safe to assume if the island is not posted then it is ok to set foot on it?

In addition to nautical charts, google earth shows them. They show in some cases whether they are owned privately or not. They tell you if they are adminitered by the military or if the access is restricted due to endangered species on the island or archaeological reasons.

There are nautical navigational charts (maps) for this. NOAA produces and maintains nautical charts that cover the coastal waters of the U.S. and its territories.
You can view and download these chats free at NOAA’s chart link below.
The charts have all the information you need to determine if an island is safe or not, and how deep the water is around it.

It depends on which country you’re boating in.
If you were anywhere in Scandinavia or Scotland for example you would have a right to set foot on any island you wished.
Some other countries have stringent trespass laws.

Perhaps a local chart might indicate the ownership/privacy status.
